When I was 25 weeks pregnant, I was put on bed rest. I was starting to dilate and because my job required me to be on my feet 6+ hours a day, my doctor felt that this was the best call for both of us. I still remember showing up in my boss’s office wearing sweatpants in hysterics. I loved my job and was devastated when the doctor told me I couldn’t work anymore. Mix that with the fear of possibly delivering a premature baby AND pregnancy hormones…I was a mess.
For the remaining 15 weeks, I was confined to my bed. I was only allowed to get up to use the bathroom, shower and occasionally move from my bedroom to the living room. My only job was to continue to keep my baby in “one more day”. At the end of each day, Brendon and I would high five and celebrate the fact that we were one day closer to a healthy baby.
Aside from visitors and a severe Netflix addiction, there was one thing that kept me sane…it was the vision of us reading together. Long before Landon was born there were two things I knew his nursery needed. The first was a fully stocked library and the second was an amazing rocking chair to read to him in. Throughout the remaining 15 weeks, I imagined reading to him each night in that chair. Each day from my bed, I would read to him and imagine us reading together in the future. Magazines, Harry Potter, What to Expect, it didn’t matter. I bonded with my baby in what I think is such a special way and honestly feel like that kept me from falling in to a deep depression. You always think you want to spend your life in bed watching movies until you actually have to do it. It sucks!
I feel so lucky to say that one more day turned to one more week and finally at 37 weeks, our baby bear was born. He was 100% healthy at a whopping 9 lbs 4oz and we were over the moon. After 5 days in the hospital (he was a massive breech baby so I had a planned c-section), we were finally able to bring him home. Even during our crazy first night at home, I sat in that chair feeding him while his father read to him. This has become a nightly routine for our family and is always a time that I look forward to.
As an English teacher I LOVE books! Going to the bookstore with Landon is one of my favorite things to do and I’ll find any excuse to do it! These are a few of our favorite books, but we are always looking for more! Leave some suggestions in the comments!
